In the last few days, evidence has been mounting that Josh Gad may be about to sign on to be the Penguin for the DCEU. He recently visited DC headquarters and posed for a picture (which he soon added to his twitter feed) of himself holding a comic book with the Penguin on the cover with Geoff Johns and Jon Berg of DC Entertainment and the title “Nothing to see here…” which frankly means there is everything to be seen here!
This is in addition to the fact that in early May he added a photo to his social media feed of the Penguin, which led everyone to speculate that he was going to portray the villain in the upcoming The Batman movie starring Ben Affleck as the titular hero and directed by Matt Reeves.
Now, when Ben Affleck was set to direct The Batman, it was all but confirmed that the villain would be Deathstroke – Joe Manganiello was confirmed for the role and there was set video footage revealed of Deathstroke. However, since Affleck stepped down from the directors chair, Joe has come out and said that he’s not even sure if he’ll be Deathstroke anymore and now that Matt Reeves is pulling the strings, he may well see it fit to have the Penguin fill the villain role instead with Josh Gad.
Now, if Reeves was to go for the Penguin instead of Deathstroke then that goes against what Ben Affleck wanted for the movie (a villain we’d not previously seen before), however, with Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens in the works, Gad could be setting up the Penguin to be in one of those (or all three!).
Unfortunately, that’s all we know for the moment. Currently, Reeves is still working on current project War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) and won’t be able to work on The Batman until that’s wrapped up and released.
Either way, Josh Gad being the Penguin in any of the movies slated to be coming up is exciting as Gad has shown time and again that he has the acting chops to fill any role!
