Fresh off of the success of the Lego Batman Movie (2017) (which thankfully beat Fifty Shades Darker (2017) upon its release), Warner Brothers have moved quickly to keep main man Chris McKay and tie him down to direct the forthcoming Nightwing movie. DC fans rejoice!
Nightwing, aka Dick Grayson, is best known in the DC universe as being the original Robin. Grayson was the youngest member of a family of acrobats known as the Flying Graysons. After his parents were murdered, he was taken in by Bruce Wayne aka the Batman. He not only became Robin but went on to become the leader of the Teen Titans and later on, once older, going on to shedding the Robin name and becoming Nightwing.
A stand-alone hero in his own right, Nightwing successfully rid himself of the sidekick baggage and went on to have his own comic series, and now a well deserved movie. With that in mind, let’s discuss my top 5 picks for the Nightwing role.
1. Zac Efron
While the High School Musical (2006) star may not be everyone’s top choice purely because of that, I personally have him at the top of my list for my perfect casting for the Nightwing movie.
Efron is a talented actor with the right height and build for an older acrobat as well as the good looks and charm of a ladies man. He’s also shown time and again that he can carry a movie both on his own and with an established lead.
With his forthcoming action-comedy Baywatch (2017) alongside the Rock, I believe that his future as an action start (with comedic chops) is only further going to be strengthened.
I have no doubt that not only would he be a great Nightwing but also that he’d bring a new audience of moviegoers to a character, although a DC fan favourite, that is lesser known to the wider public.
2. Armie Hammer
Since his breakout in The Social Network (2010) as the Winklevoss twins (not Veronica Mars or Desperate Housewives!), Armie’s star power has been on the rise, and rightly so.
He soon went on to play The Lone Ranger (2013) alongside Johnny Depp and while that movie was not a critical hit at the box office, the movie was actually really good. Seriously, check it out; it’s not the blunder it was made out to be.
Anyway, he’s since been awesome in The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015) alongside Henry Cavill (both having great chemistry on screen together), the controversial The Birth of a Nation (2016) and Tom Ford’s Norturnal Animals (2016).
While Hammer has both the build and look of a charming ladies man (and no doubt would fill those Nightwing spandex well), he may be a little tall. Standing at a lofty 6’5, he’s an inch taller than Affleck and about 7 inches taller than the 5’10 Nightwing from the comics.
If this is his only negative then be it a small one (pun intended) as clever camera angles and boxes do wonders for actor’s heights.
3. Logan Lerman
Another young(er) actor on the list, Logan is in no way less talented. In fact, in my opinion, he is the most talented on the list alongside Miles Teller.
From a young age (yes, even younger than 25), Logan has shown his big budget action chops in the Percy Jackson series as well as his ability to play a damaged young man on the fringes of suicide in what is my favourite role of his in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012).
He was again one of the better things of the horrendous steampunk reboot the three Musketeers (2011) and held his own alongside Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf in the fantastic David Ayer movie Fury (2014).
He’s also close in looks and height (and possibly age) to Nightwing and the DC cinematic universe would be lucky to have such an up and coming talented actor to join their ranks.
4. Miles Teller
In recent years, Miles Teller has shown that he has range. Just think about it. He’s played the scientific nerd (in the rubbish Fantastic Four (2015) movie – though lets be fair, he was good), the unstoppable drummer in Whiplash (2014), the annoying little shit in the Divergent series and now an inspiring boxer that beat the odds to make the comeback of a lifetime.
Indeed, the guy has range, and talent to boot. He may however also have the resting face of someone that wouldn’t tip at a restaurant, but that’s beside the point and frankly, unproven.
He does however, along with the other notable actors on this list, have the charm, the physicality and the look. What’s more, he’s also proven that he can play both the lead and the supporting actor (if he was indeed to feature in the upcoming The Batman movie alongside Ben Affleck or in future DC movies).
Once again, I have no doubt that if chosen; he would do the role justice and be an amazing Nightwing.
5. Liam Hemsworth
A superhero list wouldn’t be complete without a Hemsworth on it, now would it? With his older brother prepares to fight the Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and his other older brother fighting sentient robots in Westworld, this may be the role to properly launch the third and youngest Hemsworth into the fold. Plus, then the family would have both DC and Marvel covered.
Not to say that he isn’t famous, but he only really had a bit part in the Hunger Games series (until the last one of course) and The Expendables 2 (2012). Also, while he was a good addition to the recent Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), the movie wasn’t a big hit (though surprisingly good, if I do say so) and unlikely to have a sequel.
That aside, he’s only 27 and still on the look out for a big role and Nightwing could be it. He’s good looking, physically resembles a superhero and was genuinely both equal parts endearing and charming in the movies mentioned above.
While not my top choice, he’d be a decent Nightwing all the same.
